Pure Tung Oil is obtained from the seeds of a tropical tree—the Tung tree (Aleurites fordii). It is a member of the spurge Family, and can also be known as China Wood Oil or Nut Oil. The seeds found in the centre of the tung fruit contain more than 50% Tung Oil, which is extracted when the seeds are ground and pressed.

Tung Oil is a drying oil, which means that it forms a solid film on contact with oxygen. When applied to timber this film is thin, tough and gorgeous, bringing out the natural beauty of the wood while protecting it. The oil is amber coloured and it imparts a deep, satin warmth to darker timbers.

Pure Tung Oil is also a most effective seal for concrete bench-tops, floors , slate/ stone, terracotta, mud brick (adobe) and other similar constructions. The finish is more suited for interior or exterior/protected use than fully exposed exterior, due to a lack of UV resistance.

A very useful oil for wooden kitchen benches, which gives great protection from moisture and which can be conveniently purchased from Timbecon.

This is a pleasant smelling tung oil. It can be applied full strength with a little more effort or diluted and more easily applied. It does need re-application and leaves a satin finish on softwood and hardwood. Interestingly I tried estapol (Carbothane) and Tung Oil on Baltic Pine and the end result was smoother with Tung Oil. Carbothane may be better for harder wear areas but time will tell.

Pure tung oil. Nothing more

Pure tung oil. Nothing more to say except this is such a brilliant all-rounder in a sea of finishes. Just apply it sparingly, let it soak in, dry and cure. Give it the time it deserves and it will reward you every time.
